Branded Mention

A branded mention is any reference to your brand name across the web, linked or not, that helps AI systems recognize you as a known entity and weigh how often and how favorably you're discussed.

Also known as: brand mention, unlinked mention

A branded mention is the web talking about you — with or without a link. It's any place your name appears: a Reddit thread, a review, a news article, a podcast transcript, a forum reply. Unlike traditional SEO, which prized the hyperlink, AI systems weigh the mention itself, because mentions are how they learn that an entity exists and how it's regarded.

Branded mentions are the raw material of the authority pillar. The more often reputable, independent sources name you — and the more consistently positive that context — the more confident an engine becomes in recommending you. This is why "be talked about in the places your customers and the engines read" beats chasing links, and why earned mentions compound into recognition over time.

Example. A SaaS tool repeatedly named in "best tools for X" Reddit threads and review roundups builds branded mentions that teach engines it's a real, well-regarded option — so it starts showing up in AI answers to "what should I use for X," even without a single backlink from those pages.
