Content Freshness

Content freshness is how recently and actively your content has been updated, a signal AI engines weigh because they favor current information and rotate stale sources out of answers.

BBurke Atkerson

Content freshness is how current and maintained your pages are. It's signaled by genuine, substantive updates and a visible, recent date — and engines pay attention, because retrieval lets them prefer up-to-date sources and they tend to cycle older content out of answers over time.

It's the freshness pillar, and it directly counters the model's knowledge cutoff: fresh, retrievable pages supply the current facts a model's frozen memory can't. The key word is substantive — quietly changing a date without improving the content is the kind of trick engines increasingly ignore. Real freshness means revisiting pages as facts change, updating numbers and claims, and showing the update honestly.

Example. A "best laptops 2026" guide that's genuinely refreshed when new models ship stays citable, while a 2023 version decays out of answers — the same query, won by whoever kept their page actually current.
