Zero-Click Search
Zero-click search is when a user gets their answer directly on the results page or in an AI response without clicking through to any website, the dominant pattern AEO is a response to.
Zero-click search is the answer with no website visit. When a featured snippet, AI Overview, or chatbot response satisfies the question in place, the user never clicks a link — so the traditional payoff of ranking, the click, simply doesn't happen. This pattern is why AEO exists.
It reframes the goal: when most queries end without a click, value shifts from getting the visit to being the cited source inside the answer — the visibility, the brand credit, and the one remaining path to your site. Measuring success therefore moves from pageviews to citation share and the smaller but high-intent AI referral traffic that survives — the adaptability pillar of tracking the right metric. Fighting zero-click is futile; being the source it draws from is the play.
Example. Someone asks "what's the capital of Australia," reads "Canberra" in the AI answer, and never clicks. The site that supplied that fact got cited, not visited — which is the kind of win AEO now optimizes for.
